Pelosi Update

Care in Crisis
This week, I joined Congresswoman Terri Sewell at Cooper Green Mercy Hospital in Birmingham to hear directly from patients, providers and advocates about the growing health care crisis. One family shared that after enhanced Affordable Care Act tax credits expired, their monthly premium soared from $180 to $1,800—leaving two patients with serious medical conditions uninsured.

Republicans have compounded this crisis by cutting nearly $1 trillion from Medicaid, threatening families, safety-net providers and rural hospitals already struggling to survive. Democrats will continue fighting to restore affordable coverage, reverse these devastating cuts and ensure health care remains a right for all—not a privilege for the few.

Degrees of Determination
Today, I had the honor of delivering the commencement address to graduates of the Northwestern Prison Education Program. These extraordinary women made history as the first incarcerated women in the nation to earn bachelor’s degrees from a top-ten university.

Their journey began through correspondence during the pandemic and continued through years of demanding study, personal hardship and remarkable perseverance. As they begin their next chapter, I urged them to carry three lessons forward: be yourself, be ready and know your power.

Costs Keep Climbing
President Trump promised to lower costs, but inflation is accelerating and working families are struggling to make ends meet. His illegal war in Iran and reckless tariffs are driving up prices on everything from gas to groceries while spineless Republicans in Congress rubber-stamp his disastrous agenda.

Seniors on fixed incomes are being hit especially hard, with Social Security checks unable to keep pace with Trumpflation. House Democrats will continue fighting to lower costs, protect Social Security and ensure every American can retire with dignity.

Honoring Indigenous Peoples
This week, we celebrated Indigenous Peoples Day and the rich cultures, histories and enduring contributions of Indigenous peoples. Tribal communities have shaped our nation across generations and continue to enrich the fabric of American life.

We must honor that legacy through action by respecting Tribal sovereignty and strengthening health care, education and economic opportunity. Today and every day, Democrats remain committed to working alongside Tribal Nations to build a more just future.
