Legacy of Courage
Housing Held Hostage
Earlier this week, Congress passed a bipartisan plan to help more Americans achieve the dream of homeownership. At a time when too many families are struggling with rising housing costs, this legislation would expand access to affordable housing and create new opportunities for hardworking Americans to put down roots and build a better future.
Unfortunately, President Trump is refusing to sign this bipartisan bill unless Congress allows him to take over our elections. Donald Trump would rather see Americans living on the streets than voting at the ballot box. Americans should never be forced to choose between making homeownership more attainable and protecting our democracy.

Honoring Heroes
This week, I was honored to join in introduce legislation awarding Congressional Gold Medals to the brave Americans who aided Jewish families and other victims during the Holocaust. Their courage reminds us that even in humanity's darkest moments, ordinary people can perform extraordinary acts of conscience and compassion. Their legacy deserves our nation's highest gratitude.
This legislation is also deeply personal to me. My father, then-Congressman Thomas D'Alesandro Jr., stood among those who answered the call to help refugees fleeing Nazi persecution, a source of immense pride for our family. As we honor these heroes, we renew our commitment to confronting antisemitism, defending human dignity and ensuring that future generations never forget the lessons of the Holocaust.

Honoring Our Reservists
It was an honor to accept the Minuteman Award from the Reserve Organization of America as we celebrate America's 250th anniversary. For decades, ROA has championed the Reservists and National Guard members whose service strengthens our nation's security and keeps our communities safe.
America's strength depends not only on those who serve full time, but also on the citizen-servicemembers who answer the call whenever and wherever they are needed. I remain committed to ensuring our Reservists, military families and veterans receive the support, benefits and respect they have earned and deserve through their service to our country.

Equality Endures
Eleven years ago, the Supreme Court's Obergefell decision affirmed that love is love and guaranteed marriage equality across our nation. In 2022, Democrats proudly codified those protections through the Respect for Marriage Act, ensuring that countless families would have greater security under the law. It remains one of the proudest achievements in our fight for equality.
Yet we know the struggle for civil rights is never truly over. As Republican leaders continue to target the LGBTQ+ community and seek to roll back hard-won freedoms, Democrats remain steadfast in defending the dignity, equality and liberty of every American. Together, we will continue working toward a future where everyone is treated with the respect they deserve.

Safer Communities Ahead
This week marked four years since Democrats passed the Safer Communities Act into law, delivering the most significant gun violence prevention legislation in decades. While this law has already helped strengthen background checks, invest in mental health and support safer communities, our work is far from finished. Every child deserves the freedom to learn, play and grow without fear of gun violence.
Democrats will continue fighting for commonsense measures that save lives while respecting responsible gun ownership. We owe it to every family that has suffered unimaginable loss to keep building on this progress and reject the false choice between freedom and safety. For the Children, we must never stop working toward an America free from the scourge of gun violence.
